珊瑚礁の役割（さんごしょうのやくわり）Role of Coral Reefs

珊さん瑚ごは、イソギンチャクやクラゲに似にた生いき物ものです。

珊さん瑚ご礁しょうは、珊さん瑚ごが作つくった岩いわのような地ち形けいです。

珊さん瑚ごや珊さん瑚ご礁しょうには、大切たいせつな役割やくわりがたくさんあります。

役割やくわりの1つめは、海うみに住む魚など生いき物もののすみかになっていることです。

海うみには約やく50万種まんしゅの生いき物ものがいますが、そのうちの4分よんぶんの1いちの生いき物ものは、珊さん瑚ご礁しょうに住すんでいるといわれています。

卵たまごを産うんだり、魚さかなが小ちいさいうちのすみかにしたりしています。珊さん瑚ご礁しょうがあることで、魚さかななどの海うみの生いき物ものは、とても助たすかっています。

役割やくわりの2ふたつめは、海水かいすいの二に酸さん化か炭たん素その調ちょう節せつをしていることです。

珊さん瑚ごの中には、褐虫かっちゅう藻そうという植しょく物ぶつが住すんでいます。

植しょく物ぶつは、光合成こうごうせいをします。

植しょく物ぶつが、光合成こうごうせいをするときに、太陽たいようの光ひかりと水みずと二に酸さん化か炭たん素そが必要ひつようです。

珊さん瑚ごに住すむ褐虫かっちゅう藻そうは、たくさんの二に酸さん化か炭たん素そを使つかいます。

二に酸さん化か炭たん素そが増ふえすぎると、地球ちきゅうの温おん度どがあがるなど、困こまったことが起おこります。

しかし、珊さん瑚ごのおかげで、二に酸さん化か炭たん素その量りょうを減へらす役割やくわりをしています。

役割やくわりの3みっつめは、海うみの生いき物ものの食たべ物ものを作つくり出だすことです。

珊さん瑚ごは、褐虫かっちゅう藻そうにすみかを与あたえ、かわりに褐虫かっちゅう藻そうが光合成こうごうせいによってつくり出だした酸さん素そや、炭たん水すい化か物ぶつ、たんぱく質しつなどを珊さん瑚ごとして受うけとります。

栄養えいようの一いち部ぶは、粘液ねんえきとして珊さん瑚ごの外そとに出だして、珊さん瑚ご礁しょうに住む魚さかななどの小さな生いき物ものの栄養えいよう分ぶんになります。

役割やくわりの4よっつめは、珊さん瑚ご礁しょうの周まわりの陸りく地ちにある海岸かいがんを守まもることです。

珊さん瑚ご礁しょうは、成長せいちょうすると、自し然ぜんにできた防ぼう波は堤ていのような働はたらきをします。

大おおきな防ぼう波は堤ていのようになった珊さん瑚ご礁しょうは、強つよい海流かいりゅうや高波たかなみを和やわらげることができます。

このように、珊さん瑚ごや珊さん瑚ご礁しょうは、とても役やくに立たっています。

Role of Coral Reefs

Corals are organisms similar to sea anemones and jellyfish.

Coral reefs are rocky formations created by corals.

Corals and coral reefs have many important roles.

The first is that they provide a home for fish and other creatures that live in the ocean.

Of the approximately 500,000 species of creatures that live in the ocean, a quarter of them are said to live on coral reefs. They lay eggs and provide a home for fish when they are small. Coral reefs are a great help to fish and other sea creatures.

The second role is to regulate the carbon dioxide concentration of seawater.

Inside coral reefs live plants called zooxanthellae.

Plants perform photosynthesis.

When plants perform photosynthesis, they need sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.

The zooxanthellae that live on corals use a lot of carbon dioxide.

Too much carbon dioxide can cause problems, such as raising the Earth’s temperature.

However, thanks to corals, they play a role in reducing the amount of carbon dioxide.

The third role is to produce food for sea creatures.

Corals provide a home for zooxanthellae, which in return receive oxygen, carbohydrates, proteins, and other nutrients produced by photosynthesis.

Some of the nutrients are released as mucus to the outside of the coral, where they become nutrients for the small creatures that live on the coral reef.

The fourth part of its role is to protect the shoreline on land around the coral reef.

As they grow, coral reefs act like naturally formed breakwaters.

A large breakwater-like coral reef can dampen strong ocean currents and high waves.

In this way, corals and coral reefs are very useful.
