Coral Reef

Coral reefs are landforms created by corals.

Corals can be divided into two main types.

One type of coral is the reef-building coral, which lives together with many others.

The other type of coral is a solitary coral that lives alone.

There are hundreds of types of reef-building corals, such as green corals, nonglossal corals, and kikumeishi corals.

These reef-building corals are made up of clusters of “polyps” that resemble sea anemones, each about one centimeter long.

Because corals are animals, they are born as eggs.

The coral egg becomes a single individual called a “polyp” on a rock or other structure in the ocean.

The polyp has a body with a mouth and anus, many tentacles, and a calcareous skeleton underneath.

A coral reef is made up of many of these calcareous skeletons.

Corals can reproduce by laying eggs, but they can also reproduce by division.

This is when a growing coral is broken by a wave or a fish or other creature, and the broken part grows.

A broken coral can grow to its pre-broken size if it continues to grow.

By laying eggs and splitting, the coral multiplies, and this skeletal part of the coral continues to grow and take on different forms.

Simply put, corals form large clumps with their skeletal parts and live on the stone-like foundation they have created.
