Risshun/the first day of spring

Japan is a country with four distinct seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter.

There is something called the twenty-four divisions that represents the state of the season.

In the 24 solar terms, the year is divided into four seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter, and each season is further divided into six.

Today, February 4th, 2023 (Reiwa 5), marks the first day of spring in the 24 solar terms.

Risshun is the day when spring begins. It is said that the cold winter ends after the beginning of spring, and the warmth of spring begins little by little.

The day before Risshun is Setsubun, which means the day that divides the seasons.

The first day of spring changes every year, and it is often February 3rd or 2nd 4th.

The reason why the day of the first day of spring changes is that it is determined by the observation of the position of the sun by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.

In the 24 solar terms, the ecliptic, which is the path in which the sun moves, is divided into 24 equal parts and named.

The first day of spring is defined as the day when the sun is at 315 degrees of the ecliptic longitude.

A circle is 360 degrees, so dividing by 24 gives 15 degrees. Each time the sun moves 15 degrees, it is named.

By the way, the day of 0 degrees yellow longitude is the day of the vernal equinox.

There are not many events like Setsubun on the first day of spring.

In the Zen sect of Buddhism, it is customary to stick a bill with the words “Good luck in the beginning of spring/立春大吉” at the front door on the morning of the first day of spring.

When written vertically, the letters are symmetrical, and if written on thin paper, it can be read from the back as “Risshun Daikichi/立春大吉”, so this bill is said to ward off evil and bring good luck.
