Ehomaki

Ehomaki is a relatively new custom on Setsubun.

In Osaka, sushi restaurants and seaweed shops spread the word that eating sushi rolls on Setsubun is auspicious.

After a while, convenience stores and supermarkets started selling ehomaki, mainly in Osaka and Hyogo prefectures.

After that, many shops nationwide started selling ehomaki on Setsubun, and it spread all over Japan.

It is believed that on the night of Setsubun, if you can make a wish while looking in the direction of the lucky direction, you will be able to eat all the sushi rolls without saying a word, and your wish will come true.

The lucky direction is the direction of the god Toshigami, and it changes every year.

The lucky direction of 2023 (Reiwa 5) is said to be south-southeast.

When making ehomaki, it is sometimes said that it is good to use 7 kinds of ingredients. This is related to the Seven Lucky Gods that Japanese people like, and the idea is to involve the Seven Lucky Gods and receive them.

Common ingredients include kanpyo, shiitake mushrooms, tamagoyaki, eel, cucumber, shrimp, and sakura denbu, but recently there are ehomaki with a variety of ingredients such as fresh fish, beef, and vegetables.

It is said that it is better to bite into it whole, but for small children and the elderly, it may be better to cut it up and eat it, as they will not be able to breathe if they choke their throats.
