地震（じしん）earthquakes

　日に本ほんは、世せ界かいでも地じ震しんが多おおいことで有名ゆうめいです。

　1980年ねんから2000年ねんの間あいだの1年間いちねんかんに起おこった大きな地じ震しんの回数を調べてみました。すると、日に本ほんでは、1年間いちねんかんに1.14回地じ震しんがありました。

　これは、中国ちゅうごくの2.1回かい、インドネシアの1.62回かい、イランの1.43回かいについで、世せ界かい第4だいよん位いの地じ震しんの多おおさでした。

　地じ震しんは、いつ、どこで起おこるか誰だれにもわかりません。

　では、地じ震しんが起おこるのはどうしてなのでしょうか。

　実じつは、地ち球きゅうの表ひょう面めんは、「プレート」と呼よばれるとても大おおきな岩いわでおおわれています。地ち球きゅうの表ひょう面めんは、このプレートが何枚なんまいも組くみ合あわさってできています。

　日に本ほん周しゅう辺へんの地じ面めんや海うみの下したには、４よっつのプレートがあり、これらのプレートは少すこしずつ動うごいています。

　太平洋たいへいようという海うみの下したにあるプレートは、日に本ほんの陸りく地ちの下したにあるプレートよりも重おもいので、海側うみがわのプレートが、もう一方いっぽうのプレートの下したにもぐりこむということがおきています。

　このとき、とても大おおきな力ちからがはたらき、ひずみが生しょうじます。それが限界げんかいに達たっすると、ひびが入はいったり、大おおきく動うごいたりします。これが地じ震しんの正しょう体たいです。

　地じ震しんが起おこるとひずみはいったんなくなりますが、プレートは絶たえず動うごいているので、また、ひずみがたまることで、地じ震しんは繰くりかえされます。

earthquakes

　Japan is famous for having many earthquakes in the world.

　We investigated the number of large earthquakes that occurred in a year between  1980 and 2000. Then, in Japan, there were 1.14 earthquakes in one year.

　This was the fourth most frequent earthquake in the world, following China’s 2.1, Indonesia’s 1.62, and Iran’s 1.43.

　No one knows when and where an earthquake will strike.

　Then why do earthquakes occur?

　In fact, the surface of the earth is covered with rocks called “plates”. The Earth’s surface is made up of many plates.

　There are four plates under the ground and sea around Japan, and these plates are moving little by little.

　The plate under the Pacific Ocean is heavier than the plate under the Japanese landmass, so the plate on the ocean side is slipping under the other plate.

　At this time, a very large force acts and strain occurs. When it reaches its limit, it cracks or moves a lot. This is what an earthquake is.

　When an earthquake occurs, the strain disappears, but since the plates are constantly moving, the strain builds up and the earthquake repeats itself.
