津波（つなみ）Tsunamis

　津つ波なみは、大おおきな地じ震しんが起おこったときなどに起おこることがあります。

　津つ波なみとは、海うみから普ふ段だんよりも高たかい波なみが、陸りく地ちに打うちよせることです。

　高たかい津つ波なみだと、10じゅうメートルを超こえることがあります。海うみからはなれた高たかい土地とちや建物たてものに逃にげないと、波なみの強つよい水みずの勢いきおいで、海うみに引ひきこまれてしまいます。

　人間にんげんは、海うみの中なかでは、息いきができませんので、そのままおぼれて死しんでしまうこともあります。

　津つ波なみの水みずの勢いきおいで、建物たてものもかんたんにこわされます。

　では、なぜ津つ波なみが起おこるのでしょうか。

　大おおきな地じ震しんが起おきると、地じ震しんが起おこった付ふ近きんでは地じ面めんが持もち上あげられたり、押おし下さげられたりします。

　もし地じ震しんが、海うみの中で起おこり、その場所ばしょが、海底かいていの下したの浅あさいところだと、海底かいてい面めんの上じょう下げの変へん化かは、海底かいていから海面かいめんまでの海水全体かいすいぜんたいを動うごかし、海面かいめんも上じょう下げに変へん化かします。このように起おこった海水かいすいの変へん化かが、周まわりに大おおきな波なみとして広ひろがっていくことを津つ波なみといいます。

　地じ震しんが起おこったからといって、いつでも津つ波なみが起おこるわけではありません。しかし、津つ波なみはすぐにやってきます。海うみの近ちかくで、地じ震しんが起おこった時ときは、すぐに、高たかい土地とちや3階さんがい以上いじょうの高たかい建物たてものの上うえに逃にげることが必要ひつようです。

　津つ波なみは、大おおきな川かわをさかのぼって、町中まちなかに押おしよせることもあります。地じ震しんが起おこった時ときには、上うえからの落らっ下か物ぶつから身みを守まもった後あとは、地じ震しんが落おちつくと、すぐに高たかいところに逃にげることも大切たいせつです。

Tsunamis

　The force of the tsunami waters can easily destroy buildings.

　So why do tsunamis occur?

　When a large earthquake occurs, the ground is lifted or pushed down in the vicinity of the quake.

　If the earthquake occurs in the ocean, at a shallow depth below the seafloor, the up and down movement of the seafloor moves the entire ocean water from the seafloor to the sea surface, causing the sea surface to change up and down as well. This change in the seawater that occurs in this way is called a tsunami when it spreads out as a large wave around it.

　An earthquake does not always cause a tsunami. However, tsunamis do come quickly. When an earthquake occurs near the sea, it is necessary to immediately flee to higher ground or a building with at least three floors above ground level.

　Tsunamis can also travel up large rivers and come crashing into towns. When an earthquake occurs, after protecting yourself from falling objects from above, it is also important to flee to higher ground as soon as the earthquake subsides.
