しめ縄（しめなわ）Sacred rope

　日に本ほんでは、正しょう月がつの準じゅん備びとしてしめ縄なわを玄関げんかんにつけます。

　しめ縄なわは、そこに神様かみさまがいる場ば所しょであるという印しるしで、年神様としがみさまを迎える準じゅん備びです。

　しめ縄なわを飾かざることについて、次つぎのような神しん話わがあります。

　日に本ほんでは、古こ来らいから八百万やおよろずの神様かみさまがいるとされています。そのような神様かみさまの最高さいこう神しんが太陽たいようの神かみでもある天照大神あまてらすおおみかみです。

　天照大神あまてらすおおみかみの弟おとうとの須佐之男命すさのおのみことはとても乱暴者らんぼうものでした。そのことに腹はらを立たてた天照大神あまてらすおおみかみは、天岩戸あまのいわとにかくれてしまいます。太陽たいようの神かみの天照大神あまてらすおおみかみがかくれたので、世せ界かいは真まっ暗闇くらやみになり、様々さまざまな災わざわいも起おこったので、みんな困こまってしまいました。

　そこで、知ち恵えの神かみの思金神おもいかねはある計画けいかくを立たてます。

　天岩戸あまのいわとの前で、どんちゃんさわぎを始はじめます。鶏にわとりを鳴なかせたり、鏡かがみや玉たまを作つくったり、踊おどりを踊おどったりします。

　神々かみがみが大笑おおわらいしていることに、興味きょうみをもった天照大神あまてらすおおみかみが、岩いわ戸とを少すこし開あけて、天鈿女命アメノウズメに何なにがあったのかたずねます。

　天鈿女命アメノウズメは、天照大神あまてらすおおみかみよりすばらしい神かみが生まれた、とうそを言いい、鏡かがみを差さし出だして、天あま照大神てらすおおみかみの顔かおを鏡かがみに映うつします。

　天照大神あまてらすおおみかみは、鏡かがみに映うつった自じ分ぶんの姿すがたを新あたらしく生うまれた神かみだと勘違かんちがいして、その神かみを見みようと、天岩戸あまのいわとをもう少すこし開あけます。

　それを待まって岩いわ戸との陰かげにかくれていた力ちから持もちの天手力男神たじからをが、天照大神あまてらすおおみかみを引ひき出だします。続つづいて、布刀玉命ふとたまが天岩戸あまのいわとにしめ縄なわを張はって、2度にどと天照大神あまてらすおおみかみが入はいれないようにしました。

　こうして知ち恵えの神かみの思金神おもいかねの計画けいかくは成功せいこうし、世せ界かいはまた明あかるくなりました。

　これがしめ縄なわに関係かんけいする神しん話わです。

Shimenawa (sacred rope)

　In Japan, shimenawa (sacred rope) is placed at the entrance to prepare for the New Year.

　The sacred rope is a sign that it is a place for the gods to reside, and is a preparation for welcoming the god of the new year.

　The following myths are associated with the decoration of shimenawa.

　In Japan, there have been 8 million gods since ancient times. The supreme deity of these gods is Amaterasu, who is also the goddess of the sun.

　Amaterasu’s younger brother, Susano-no-mikoto, was a very violent man. Amaterasu was so angry with him that  she hid in Ama-no-Iwato. Because Amaterasu, the sun god, went into hiding, the world became pitch-dark and various calamities occurred, causing everyone to be troubled.

　Then, Omoikane, the god of wisdom, made a plan.

　He started a big party in front of Ama-no-Iwato. They clucked chickens, made mirrors and balls, and danced.

　Amaterasu, intrigued by the laughter of the gods, opens the Iwato a little and asks Amenouzume what happened.

　Amenouzume lied and said that a god greater than Amaterasu had been born, and held out a mirror to reflect Amaterasu’s face in it.

　Amaterasu mistakenly believes that her reflection in the mirror is the newly born god, and opens Iwato a little more to see him.

　Waiting for her, Tajikarawo, the powerful god, who had been hiding behind the Iwato, pulls Amaterasu out.  Futotama then placed a sacred rope around Ama-no-Iwato so that Amaterasu would never be able to enter again.

　Omoikane, the god of wisdom, succeeded in his plan, and the world became bright again.

　This is the myth related to the sacred rope.
