お米（おこめ）Rice

お米こめは、日に本ほんでよく食たべられる食たべものです。

お米こめは、穀物こくもつの1ひとつである稲いねからできています。

秋あきになって田んぼに稲いねがたくさんできます。

稲いねを、稲いね刈かり機きなどの機き械かいや、人ひとの手てなどで刈かりとります。

その後あと、稲いねの実みの部ぶ分ぶんだけを取とり出だします。

この実みの部ぶ分ぶんのことを籾もみといいます。

籾もみから殻からを取とり除のぞいたものを玄米げんまいといいます。

そして、おいしく食たべるために、玄米げんまいの表ひょう面めんを削けずったものが精米せいまいです。

家いえなどでよく食たべる白しろいご飯はんは、精米せいまいを水みずで炊といたものです。

日に本ほんでは、お米こめを炊飯すいはん器きやお鍋なべなどで炊たいて食たべることが多おおいです。

炊たいたご飯は、おむすびや寿す司しやカレーライスなどとして食たべます。

お米こめは、水みずで炊たいて食たべないといけないので、不ふ便べんに感かんじることがあるかもしれません。

お米こめは、いちごやぶどうのようにそのままでは食たべにくい食たべものです。

しかし、このことがとても役やくにたっています。

いちごやぶどうは、そのままにしていると1週いっしゅう間かんもするとくさってしまいます。

でも、お米こめは、玄米げんまいや精米せいまいのままで置おいておくと、1年いちねん以上いじょう長ながい間あいだくさらないで保ほ管かんできます。

お米こめは春はるから秋あきにかけて長ながい時じ間かんをかけて作つくられますが、いつでもできるわけではありません。

秋あきにしか稲いねは実みのりません。

その稲いねを長ながい間あいだ保ほ管かんしておけるのは、人間にんげんにとってとてもすばらしいことです。

Rice 

Rice is a common food in Japan.

Rice is made from rice, one of the grains.

In autumn, rice fields are filled with rice plants.

The rice is harvested by machines such as mowers or by hand.

Afterwards, only the kernels are removed from the rice.

This part is called the unhulled rice.

The unhulled rice is called brown rice.

Polishing is the process of shaving the surface of the brown rice to make it tastier.

The white rice often eaten at home is polished rice cooked in water.

In Japan, rice is often cooked and eaten in a rice cooker or pot.

Cooked rice is eaten as rice balls, sushi, curry and rice, etc.

Rice must be cooked and eaten with water, which may seem inconvenient.

Rice is a difficult food to eat as it is, like strawberries or grapes.

However, this is very helpful.

Strawberries and grapes will become stale within a week if left as they are.

Rice, however, can be stored for more than a year without getting moldy if it is left in its unpolished or milled state.

Rice is produced over a long period of time from spring to fall, but it is not always ready.

Rice is only harvested in the fall.

It is a wonderful thing for humans to be able to store rice for such a long time.
