Ryukyu Kingdom

In 2000, nine historic sites in Okinawa Prefecture were registered as World Cultural Heritage Sites as “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu”.

In Okinawa Prefecture, there was once a “Ryukyu Kingdom” that formed a unique culture different from that of Japan.

In the middle of the 14th century, there were three kingdoms in what is now Okinawa Prefecture. After that, in the first half of the 15th century, they were unified to form the “Ryukyu Kingdom”.

The Ryukyu Kingdom was established in 1429, about 590 years ago, and existed in the vicinity of Okinawa, Japan for about 450 years until 1879, about 140 years ago.

It prospered through extensive trade with countries such as China, Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia through the sea. As a result, a unique and international culture was formed that was different from the Japanese culture of the time.

A castle called Gusuku in Okinawa Prefecture is a good example of Ryukyu culture.

The most famous one is ① Shurijo Castle, which was built by the Ryukyu Kingdom as the residence and governing body of the king.

② Nakijin Castle, ③ Zakimi Castle, ④ Katsuren Castle, and ⑤ Nakagusuku Castle were all castles that were built when the Ryukyu Kingdom was established from the time when there were three kingdoms.

The walls of these castles are mainly made of coral limestone, and have unique characteristics of Ryukyu with many curved surfaces.

As ruins related to the royal family, there are ⑥ Shikinaen, ⑦ Sefa Utaki, ⑧ Tamaudun Mausoleum, and ⑨ Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate.
