Yakushima

Yakushima is one of the five World Heritage Sites in Japan that are registered as Natural Heritage Sites.

Yakushima is an island located on the sea about 60 kilometers south-southwest of the Osumi Peninsula in Kyushu.

It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993.

The circumference of the island is about 132 kilometers.

In the central part is Mt. Miyanoura, the highest in Kyushu.

 The height is 1936 meters.

There are other mountains over 1000 meters, sometimes called the “Ocean Alps”.

In addition, the moist winds from the sea hit these mountains, causing a large amount of rain, which is described as “it rains 35 days a month.”

Since it is located in the subtropical region, it is an island with a high average temperature.

However, because there are mountains close to 2000 meters, there are some places where the temperature is low at the top of the mountains.

Therefore, various plants have been confirmed.

The most famous of Yakushima is Yakusugi.

On Yakushima, only natural cedar trees over 1000 years old are called Yakusugi.

You can see Yakusugi in the mountains of the island.

Of these, “Jomon cedar”, which is said to be the oldest, is said to be estimated to be 4000 or 7200 years old.

You cannot go close to protect the skin and roots of the cedar.

You will see it from the observatory, which is more than 10 meters away.

Many wild animals such as Yaku monkeys and Yaku deer inhabit.
