Hineji Castle

The world heritage site introduced this time is “Himeji Castle”.

In 1993 (Heisei 5), it was registered as the first world cultural heritage in Japan along with “Buddhist monuments in the Horyuji area”.

Himeji Castle is located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture.

It is said that Himeji Castle was first built by Mr. Akamatsu in 1346.

There is also an idea that Akamatsu built a fort in Himeyama in 1333 while he was advancing soldiers to Kyoto.

Japan has an era called the Warring States period.

The power of the Muromachi Shogunate, which had ruled Japan until then, has declined.

From the late 1400s to the late 1500s, many military commanders tried to unify the country of Japan.

Warlords such as Takeda Shingen, Oda Nobunaga, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi are famous.

During the Warring States period, many warlords tried to expand their land by fighting with other warlords.

In order to advance the battle in an advantageous way, it was necessary not to be easily attacked by other warlords.

Many castles in Japan were built with such a purpose.

Many castles have tall buildings called Tensyukaku. It had the role of watching other warlords attack.

The Warring States period continued until Tokugawa Ieyasu, who became a shogun/general, created the Edo Shogunate in 1603.

Even in the Edo period, when there were no battles and peaceful times, it was used as a place for shogun/generals and castle owners to live and for politics.

At Himeji Castle, 13 different surnames and 48 people became castle owners and spent the Warring States period and the Edo period.

In the Meiji era, the world of samurai was over, and the castle was no longer needed.

Many of the castles were demolished at that time.

However, Himeji Castle was never demolished.

Even when Himeji was attacked by air raids during the Pacific War with the United States, it was not burned and remained as it is.

The walls of Himeji Castle are painted with white plaster. It is famous for its beautiful appearance as if the white egret spread its wings.

It is also called Shirasagi Castle or Hakuro Castle.
