Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima Prefecture is a shrine built in an inlet of the Seto Inland Sea. It was registered as a “World Heritage” cultural heritage site in 1996 for the rarity of the shrine’s location, the historically valuable architecture, and the beautiful scenery created by the shrine and the sea and mountains in front and behind it.

Itsukushima Shrine is located on Itsukushima (Miyajima) Island in the Seto Inland Sea, southwest of Hiroshima City. It is famous for its 16-meter-high Otorii (Grand Gate) and its vermilion-painted temple.

During the Heian period (794-1192), many buildings were constructed using the Shinden-zukuri style of building.

Itsukushima Shrine is another building that was strongly influenced by the Shinden-zukuri style. It consists of various parts, including the main hall and the flat stage, connected by long corridors called kairou.

Itsukushima Shrine is an island of faith that dates back even further than the Heian period.

It is said that the shrine was built about 1,400 years ago, and that in the Heian period (794-1192), it was transformed into its present form by Taira no Kiyomori.

The shrine is also famous as a tourist attraction because of its spectacular view of the sea in front of the Otorii gate and Mount Misen, where the gods are said to reside, behind the temple.

Recently, renovation work on the Otorii, which began in June 2019, has been completed.
