バレンタインデー　Valentine’s day

　2月にがつ14日じゅうよっかは、バレンタインデーです。

　今いまから約やく1800せんはっぴゃく年前ねんまえの、3世紀さんせいきの頃ころ、ローマの皇帝こうていクラウディウス2世にせいは、他た国こくと戦争せんそうをしたいと考かんがえました。

　そこで、皇帝こうていは、実際じっさいに戦争せんそうに行いく若者わかものが結婚けっこんをして家か族ぞくができると、戦争せんそうをしたがらなくなると考かんがえて、結婚けっこんを禁きん止ししました。

　キリスト教きょうの司し祭さいであったバレンタインは、皇帝こうていに秘ひ密みつで兵へい士しになる若者わかものの結婚けっこんを行おこなっていました。皇帝こうていの怒いかりをかったバレンタインは、2月にがつ14日じゅうよっかに処刑しょけいされてしまいました。

　後世こうせいのキリスト教きょうの人々ひとびとは、バレンタイン司し祭さいの勇ゆう気きある行動こうどうに感動かんどうし、「聖せいバレンタイン」として、恋人こいびとの守しゅ護ご神しんとしてまつるようになりました。それから、ヨーロッパを中心ちゅうしんに、2月にがつ14日じゅうよっかを「バレンタインデー」と呼よぶようになりました。

　西洋せいようの国々くにぐにでは、「バレンタインデー」は、恋人こいびとや家か族ぞくや親したしい人ひとに花はなやケーキや、カードなどの贈おくり物ものをする日ひです。贈おくるのは、女性じょせいだけでなく、男性だんせいも贈おくります。

　日に本ほんのバレンタインデーは、女性じょせいから男性だんせいにチョコレートを渡わたし、愛あいを告白こくはくする日ひとして知しられています。しかし、「女性じょせいから男性だんせいにチョコレートを贈おくる」というバレンタインの風習ふうしゅうは、日に本ほんだけの文ぶん化かです。

　最近さいきんは、自じ分ぶんのがんばりに対たいして、自じ分ぶんでチョコレートを買かって食たべて楽たのしむ人ひとも増ふえています。

Valentine’s day

　February 14th is Valentine’s Day.

　About 1800 years ago, around the 3rd century, the Roman emperor Claudius II wanted to go to war with other countries.

　Therefore, the emperor banned marriage, thinking that if young people who would actually go to war married and had families, they would not want to go to war.

　Contrary to the emperor’s ideas, Valentine, who was a Christian priest, practiced the marriage of young men who would become soldiers. Angered by the Emperor, Valentine was executed on February 14th.

　Christians in later generations were so moved by Valentine’s courageous actions that he came to be worshiped as the patron deity of his lover as “Saint Valentine”. Since then, February 14th has come to be called “Valentine’s Day”, mainly in Europe.

　In Western countries, “Valentine’s Day” is a day to give gifts such as flowers, cakes, and cards to lovers, family members, and close friends. Gifts are given by both men and women..

　Valentine’s Day in Japan is known as the day when women give chocolates to men and confess their love. However, the Valentine’s Day custom of “giving chocolate from a woman to a man” is unique to Japan.

　Recently, more and more people are enjoying themselves by buying and eating chocolates in return for their hard work.
