蛇（へび）のマーク　The Mark of the Snake

　蛇へびは、昔むかしから医学いがくに関係かんけいする生いきものだと考かんがえられてきました。

　保健ほけんや医学いがくについての世界的せかいてきな集あつまりであるＷＨＯダブルエッチオー（世界保健機関せかいほけんきかん）のマークや世界せかいのお医者いしゃさんの集あつまりである世界せかい医い師し会かいのマーク、日本にほんのお医者いしゃさんの集あつまりである日本にほん医い師し会かいのマークにも蛇へびが描えがかれています。

　お医者いしゃさんの集あつまりなど自分じぶんにはあまり関係かんけいがないと思おもう人ひともいるでしょうが、救急きゅうきゅう車しゃについているマークにも蛇へびが使つかわれているという話はなしを聞きくと、身近みぢかに感かんじるのではないでしょうか。

　救急きゅうきゅう車しゃに使つかわれているマークは、杖つえに蛇へびがまきついているマークです。

　医学いがくと蛇へびの関係かんけいは、ギリシャ神話しんわに由来ゆらいしています。

　へびつかい座ざのモデルになったアスクレピオスというギリシャ神話一しんわいちの名医めいいがいました。アスクレピオスは様々さまざまなことを学まなびましたが、一番いちばん身みにつけたのが医学いがくです。

　ある時とき、アスクレピオスがうっかり蛇へびを殺ころしてしまいました。その時とき、もう一匹いっぴきの仲間なかまの蛇へびが草くさむらから薬草やくそうを持もってきて、死しんだ蛇へびにつけたそうです。すると、その蛇へびはすぐに生いき返かえり、共ともに去さっていきました。

　そのことから、アスクレピオスは薬草やくそうの効能こうのうを熱心ねっしんに学まなびました。

　アスクレピオスは、死者ししゃを生いき返かえらせてしまい、大神おおかみのゼウスを怒おこらせて、殺ころされてしまい、へびつかい座さになりました。

　また、蛇へびが脱皮だっぴをくりかえしていくのを、再生さいせい・健康けんこうの象徴しょうちょうとして、アスクレピオスとともに星ほしにしたといわれています。

The Mark of the Snake

　The snake has long been considered a creature associated with medicine.

　The mark of the World Health Organization (WHO), a global organization for health and medicine, the mark of the World Medical Association, a group of doctors in the world, and the mark of the Japan Medical Association, a group of doctors in Japan, also have snakes on them.

　Some people may think that a group of doctors has little to do with them, but when they hear that a snake is also used in the mark on an ambulance, they may feel familiar with it.

　The symbol used on ambulances is a snake coiled around a walking stick.

　The connection between medicine and snakes comes from Greek mythology.

　There was a famous doctor in Greek mythology named Asklepios, who was the model for the serpentine constellation. Asklepios learned many things, but the thing he learned the most was medicine.

　One day, Asclepius inadvertently killed a snake. At that time, another fellow snake brought a medicinal herb from the grass and put it on the dead snake. The snake immediately came back to life and left with him.

　From this, Asklepios eagerly studied the efficacy of the herb.

　Asclepius brought the dead back to life, offending the great god Zeus, who killed him and made him a serpent.

　It is also said that the serpent’s repeated shedding of its skin was made into a star with Asklepios as a symbol of rebirth and health.
